SPARKy Productions

The Hispanic Women’s Project

Produced in 2016, this a play tells the true stories of local Latinas. It shines a light into the difficulties and the barriers that exist in our town. The production caused a stir, as it told of the hardships and sacrifices the women make to create a better life for their children.

SPARKy Productions was established in 1998 by two local Telluride mothers, Jennie Franks and Katie Jewett.

Since that time the organization has evolved and morphed into an entity that encompasses art, theatre and education. SPARKy created the Telluride Playwrights Festival, which for a decade brought professional actors, playwrights and directors from major theatre companies all over the country to the beautiful San Juan Mountains.

While SPARKy Productions now focuses most of its efforts and energy on The Latina Scholarship Fund and raising awareness and support for young Latinas in the region, the theatre and film company still has its hand on the pulse of performance and production.

Youth

In the late 90’s two Telluride mothers, Jennie Franks and Katie Jewett, created the non-profit SPARKy Productions to make SOFT SMOKE, AIDS IN THE RURAL WEST.

The educational documentary was shown locally and in Health Departments nationwide.

Film

Then we made THE BALLAD OF ARTHUR MULDOON which aired on Rocky Mountain PBS and in film festivals.

This award-winning children’s film featured Terry Jones of Monty Python, and over 100 local children in front and behind the camera.

Theatre

Next, we produced The Telluride Playwrights Festival, bringing together playwrights, actors, and directors to work on new plays.

After 10 years we culminated with THE HISPANIC WOMEN’S PROJECT, an original play that told true stories of local Latinas.
